Photo Diary: PENICHE

“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink in the wild air.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have recently returned from a surf trip to Portugal with my university’s surf club. With the weather forecast predicting rain and storms all week and not a glimpse of sun, I set off expecting the worst with my raincoat grudgingly stuffed at the top of my suitcase. As I waited for my bus to Peniche with a new-found friend, an unexpected burst of sun shone down on our bench at Lisbon bus station as we shared snacks and swapped stories from our travels.

Arriving at Baleal, the small coastal town where we stayed, my lift confirmed that the weather would remain ‘shitty’ for the remainder of the week as we ran to the transfer bus to escape a sudden shower of rain. We were pleasantly surprised, however, when we woke the next day to blue skies and glorious sunshine, heading straight for the beach to catch our first waves of the week.
